Jan. 3, 2005 Canada is about to pass legislation making same sex marriage legal. Candadians have long supposed themselves leaders in cutting edge social change. During the African and Asian decolonization period she preached to the Europeans on the evil of their ways. (Strangely enough retaining her status of a constitutional monarchy thus subjecting the Canadian aboriginal population to laws make outside of Canada.) During the Vietnam War she protected scores of thousands of fleeing US draft dodgers at the same time preaching to the US on the evils of the new colonization. In the ensuing social revolution regarding abortion, pot, and the confiscation of wealth she vehemently opposed the re-election of Richard Nixon (who opposed the above) and with the resulting shrinking of the European and North American populations held her self up as a beacon of light for the oppressed of the developing nations, depicting them as being in danger due to the policies of the US, encouraging them to condemn and ridicule those who had invited them in. To an outsider the above must seem to be a little exaggerated. After all Canadians overseas are in the main a quite ,respectful and slightly over awed bunch, not being used to what appear to them to be large populations and infrastructure. (Canada has a minute population inhabiting one of the largest land masses in the world.) Not so in Canada itself. In Canada Canadians constantly boast of their peace keeping efforts which are regarded( by them) as the cornerstone of world stability ,of the favourable rating given to them by the UN regarding Canada being one of the most desirable places to live (using UNstatistics taking in to account the situations of world populations),of her much vaunted health care and social system which she uses to lambaste the US, citing the US uninsured but forgetting to mention that they probably receive treatment faster in US hospitals than do insured Canadians in Canadian hospitals. Canadians feel that the rest of the world does not recognize their achievements and at the same time constantly procrastinate among themselves regarding the Canadian identity, in the process trying to get some kind of response, not realizing that the world is a big place and that Canada is analogous to a computer thumb sketch stretched to twenty thousand miles leaving it practically invisible. Its not that the world is ignoring Canada it's just that it really is such a small place and what with the problems in the Middle East and in Latin America, can not compete for world attention.
Well it looks as though she has finally succeeded
in making a name for herself on the world stage. A
bill is before the Canadian Parliament that will
make marriage between couples of the same
recognizable in law. One can look in the history
books spanning a period of over five thousand
years and not come upon any such epic
momentous legislation. Canada has finally made
her mark upon the world which none can ignore.
She wasn't the first, Belgium and Holland beat
her to the punch as did a few US states all of
which in the past were fast to legalize some pretty
weird stuff. Canada can not be placed in the same
category. We all know of the cafes of the former
where strange substances are sold over the
counter, and of course California is taken seriously
by no one; but Canada, who would believe it surely
some one, will now take notice.
