Feb. 28, 2005 Bob Dylan had a very famous tune, part of which went : Come senators, congressmen Please heed the call Don't stand in the doorway Don't block up the hall For he that gets hurt Will be he who has stalled There's a battle outside And it is ragin'. It'll soon shake your windows And rattle your walls For the times they are a-changin'. Indeed, Mr. Dylan! The times they are a-changin,' here and abroad. It was not so long ago, just November, 2003, when Mr. Walid Jumblatt was a member of the chorus bad-mouthing Bush and "neocons" such as Paul Wolfowitz, going so far as to call Mr. Wolfowitz a "virus." But now things are different. "It's strange for me to say this, but this process of change has started because of the American invasion of Iraq. I was cynical about Iraq. But when I saw the Iraqi people voting three weeks ago, eight million of them, it was the start of a new Arab world. The Syrian people, the Egyptian people, all say that something is changing." --Walid Jumblatt in the Washington Post President Bush's steadfastness in pursuing his approach to making the USA sfer (and incidentally saving western civilization) by converting repressive Muslim regimes to democracy is bearing fruit. Some of that fruit is, assuredly, unripened, but it is fruit nonetheless and it will ripen with time. Have you ever noticed that putting a ripe banana in a bag with the green bananas causes them to ripen faster? Bush has used Afghanistan and Iraq as the ripe fruit to trigger the ripening of the rest. The Afghans and Iraqis have now held elections and quite suddenly other changes occur. Libya has renounced its weapons program. The Palestinians and Israelis are talking. And as evidenced by Mr. Jumblatt, the Egyptians, Syrians, and the Lebanese people are becoming more emboldened to make changes in their repressive regimes. It is time for even the most fanatic leftist to realize that Bush was right. And though the obstructionism against Social Security reform persists, it may well be overcome. And it may have been just a feint anyway. The tax code might have been the primary goal of reform. The Fair Tax proposal may itself have been a head fake, as the Flat Tax proposal appears to be gaining some momentum. Or maybe, just maybe, Bush plans to persist with both SoshSec and tax reform. Now that would indicate changin' times for sure! ------------ About the author Brooks A. Mick: 63-yr-old physician, still practicing medicine but retired from the US Army.
