Feb. 28, 2005 American Society is in a pathetic state and it has been for many years when it comes to the issues and concerns of the elderly. This is purely my own point of view but working in the healthcare system for almost 4 years now I have had the opportunity to see this decline from many different angles. Its interesting to see that in our society the very young and the very old are disposable. We either stuff them in dumpsters such has been the case with many unwanted newborns or we stick them in an Assisted Living Center which is a glorified nursing home or in an actual nursing home leaving them there to live out the remainder of their days forgotten. The elderly have such wealths of knowledge and such memories of which a lot of times not even their own families know all the things they have done and seen in their lifetimes. In eastern cultures they treat their older family members with great reverence as well as many other cultures world wide. Our American culture is one of such self absorption and no regard for life whether its animal life or human life, all we care about is having bigger and better things than our neighbors that our culture has broken down to practically nothing. Everyday I see these people who by no choice of their own being torn from the only home they have known to be left in a place where they have no friends and are seen with so little respect its heartbreaking. Do people in America actually believe that they will never get old or get sick? That we will all live forever? These people have no voices except for those of us who give a damn about them to be heard. I have seen first hand the treatment that doctor's as well as other healthcare professionals give to the elderly, if they complain about pain or have an issue its always add another pill to the large amount of pills they are already taking in some cases to keep them quiet. So in turn making the insurance companies and pharmaceutical companies even more wealthier than they already are. The simple fact of the matter is this, our elderly are being pushed aside as though their lives never mattered nor do they now. There need to be huge changes not only with our healthcare system as a whole in care for everyone not only the elderly and also if we as family members of older parents and grandparents we need to listen to their wishes and their needs and we also need to listen to the histories that they have to share with us for if we do not in the end we will loose a lot of our own history. Its no wonder our country is in the sorry shape that it is today. We don't even know where we come from so how could we possibly know where we are going? ------------ About the author: Allison has been writing short stories and poems since the age of 12 and has been working hard to get these into publication.
