The Bear And His Honey

By Stan Grimes
Feb. 28, 2005

The big brown bear reaches up and swats the beehive to the ground. He hungrily grabs hunks of the sweet syrupy food with his large paws and stuffs into his mouth. The angry bees sting and sting, but they only annoy the hungry bear. He will not be stopped. He has been stung before. His thick skin and coat act as protection against such attacks. They hurt him superficially, but slight pain is worth the sweet reward.

A car bomb kills over 120 Iraqi civilians today. Over 1300 American troops have been killed. Many innocent civilians have been beheaded simply because they had ties to the perceived ugly American cause. The nest has been destroyed. The American bear has extracted the sweet nectar in the form of a bearded despot. The despot’s bees continue to sting with their car bombings, their beheadings, and their attacks on civilians, but they’re only annoyances to the bear of democracy. He will not be stopped. He has been stung before. His thick mind acts a protection against such attacks. The pain is worth the reward for him.

One must ask though, is the pain of amputations, burns, and bullet holes worth the effort? How long will the bees sting? The bees have killed many of the bear’s soldiers and show no signs of stopping their quest to rub the bear’s nose into his captured honey. When will the court of public opinion finally bring the bear to his senses? How many will be killed before this happens? In 1973, over 50,000 American troops had been killed before the court of American opinion caused the bear to leave the bees’ nest. Over 100,000 Vietnamese men, women, and children paid the price of being in the way of the bear.

The sad case to made is “we” Americans have control over this confused and unstoppable bear; hence, we are just as guilty. The blood does not fade on our hands.
