Feb. 28, 2005 Is it just me, or does it appear that people with the best jobs have the worst attitudes? In this globally competitive, technologically advanced era, how I long for the good ole days! Remember when customer was “king”? When we were seduced by slogans like “The customer is always right.” And “We can’t spell success without “U”. When pleas for assistance were met with a personal phone call or penned letter from the company’s president, not automated responses and endless E-mails. Blame it on demanding work hours, increasing job dissatisfaction, or a declining work ethic, but there is definitely a paradigm shift. What is even more disheartening is that many of us who have encountered rude, rough and incompetent service have come to expect and accept it. The other day I was standing in line at my local bank. The tellers were extremely slow, and more concerned with gossiping and laughing behind their glass window in full view of customers, (who were multiplying in numbers). On several occasions, they would walk away from their stations and retreat to the back office with not as much as an “excuse me” or “I’ll be right back.” Not to mention, some were incompetent and Irritable. By the time I finished my transaction, I was so exhausted I had to go home and take a nap! Shortly thereafter, I visited the post office only to be further frustrated. While in line, I mistakenly filled out the wrong form and when I presented it to the customer service representative, she barked at me as if I were trying to transport explosives! Working with the public can take its toll, of this I am aware. But far too many employees fail to realize that if it were not for us they would not be employed. In my book, reason enough for at least a smile and a little bit of courtesy. ------------ About the author: Jennifer Brown Banks is an award-winning poet and popular feature writer.
