Feb. 28, 2005 I don't quite get the winter blues. I think blue is a nice color. It's the color of a clear sunny sky. February is not clear, or sunny. It is dull gray and brown and nasty. Look, right now I'm trying to keep a positive attitude. Everyone I know(including myself)tells me the key to surviving any serious illness is a positive attitude. February is not positive. It is just nasty. Maybe that's why they singled it out to have National Black History month. It is also short. I personally see having one month to celebrate only one single race is in itself racist and bigoted, but I'll get into that at another time. February doesn't inspire me to sing, either. I mean when I think of the blues I think of music. I think of Norma Jones and Ray Charles. I think of Stevie Wonder (remember when it was Little Stevie Wonder?)I can think of no songs inspired by February. True, winter also involves December, January, and the end of and the beginning of November and March. However, think...November has Thanksgiving, December has Christmas and Channacha (?), January has New Years day(besides having my mother and daughter's birthday), March has St.Patrick's day(my birthday)and the start of spring. February...what does February have? Groundhog day. A movie Bill Murrey may want to forget.(I didn't see it, but haven't heard raves about it either)A holiday to tell us we're getting 6 more weeks of winter and blaming it on a rodent. Well, okay there's St. Brigdet's day just before that, but this isn't Ireland. It also has St. Valentine's day which is depressing when you don't have a valentine. Which brings me back to the Black History thing. Think about it. A whole month for black history? isn't that bigoted? Black as a color is also the color of depression. Black moods? Black humor? Let's wait till March and have a Green history month. March we could study the contributions of the Irish to this country. You know! Good outstanding people like Cab Callaway, Ella Fitzgerald, Nell Carter, Bill Cosby, and Michael Jorden. I'm sure you've heard of some of them. Let's just get through February and if you gotta have something to call the month let February be Frozen Food month and not March. Somehow it fits. ------------ About the author: Lee Zelhart is a proud graduate of McKendree College and the author of The Ghost of the Cavalier due out May 2nd.
