Feb. 28, 2005 I have been watching professional-wrestling again for quite a while now, and I must say I think maybe I should have just stopped watching professional-wrestling all together. WrestleMania is known as “the granddaddy” of sports entertainment. However, like most granddaddy’s, this granddaddy is ready to die. This year is the 21st annual WrestleMania, and while there has been classic WrestleMania’s like WrestleManis III with Hulk Hogan vs. Andre the Giant, Macho Man vs. Ricky Steamboat-clearly the BEST wrestling match of all time. Who can forget the Ironman match between Shawn Michaels and Bret Hart? Instant classic. Then again, there has been WrestleMania matches that have been a complete joke. Remember Bam Bam Bigelow vs. Lawrence Taylor? Star quality isn’t always the best decision for wrestling matches, let alone has-been football players. The strange fact that I still find hard to believe is that WrestleMania 21 has NOT sold out yet. Who can blame anyone for not buying tickets for WrestleMania 21? It’s bad enough paying close to 50 bucks just to watch it on pay- per-view, but can you imagine paying close to $3000 for front row tickets? Not I. The nose bleed seats are almost a hundred bucks. In other words, you could stay home, pay $50, and get a better view than pay close to double and maybe see the top of some guy’s head then see the wrestlers “wrestling.” I was indeed impressed with last year’s WrestleMania, Chris Benoit winning the title from Triple H was amazing, because any fan of professional wrestling realizes that he had to pay a lot of dues in other to be accepted to the richest prize in the WWE. However, it seemed that after WrestleMania was over, the WWE declined with fresh ideas, talent, chances, and it showed with declines in sales. This year’s WrestleMania looks as if the WWE isn’t even trying, and to be honest I don’t think they are trying anymore. I just recently heard that the Undertaker will be facing Randy Orton. The overrated vs. the overworked. Randy Orton has this gimmick where he is supposable a “legend killer,” and Orton plays that role well, because he couldn’t defeat these top stars like Foley, Taker, or even the Rock when they were in their prime. The problem I have with Orton is, he is NOT main event material, he is very naive when it comes to the business of wrestling and he has to pay his dues like Benoit, Jericho, Guerrero, and Steve Austin. This match is a duel match, because there wasn’t a buildup to the story of Undertaker and Orton, because for one, they are on two different WWE programs, so it is hard to develop a feud between a legend and a legend killer if they are on two different programs. I do hate when matches are signed between two guys with no feud, no story, and no chemistry; that is one of the reasons why Stone Cold Steve Austin left after he wrestled Scott Hall in a WrestleMania, because Vince wanted Steve to job to Brock Lesnar, and there was no storyline to it; therefore, he left, and I didn’t blame him. I actually heard that Jericho and Benoit, two guys who SHOULD be in the main even for Triple H’s title are in a tag match against Mohammad Hassan and Daivari, which are two guys working an Arab/American gimmick, obviously a ripoff gimmick to the Iron Sheik gimmick, the only twist of new is they are “Arab-Americans.” God forbid that Vince would try to use a “terrorist” gimmick. While Mohammad Hassan is a promising wrestler with loads of potential, he has yet to rank up there with Benoit and Jericho yet. However, I believe that Mohammad works the character very well, he is a tremendous athlete, very sculpted, and works well with others, but he has yet to be in a WrestleMania match with two of the greatest champions of all time. While I do wish Mohommad the best, I do want to say that he should feel lucky he is in a match of this magnitude. Paul London vs. Chavo Guerrero, this match is what I like to call, “the intermission match,” in other words, this is the match where you get up go to the bathroom, buy some merchandise, get a few autographs, etc. Kurt Angle vs. Shawn Michaels. This match looks promising, but once again there is no story, no feud, nothing on the line, just another match with everyone in the audience scratching their heads. JBL vs. John Cena. John Cena has one of the worst gimmicks ever, in my opinion. The white rapper gimmick ranks up there with the Brooklyn Brawler. While Cena was brilliant with his raps, his raps recently have declined into mediocre raps about nothing, what is weird is I have heard some of his rhymes and they don’t even rhyme. I believe Cena should be a heel again; in other words, “a bad guy.” Really can’t say much about JBL, because I stopped watching Smackdown when Eddie lost the belt to JBL. While WrestleMania is usually a wrestling card that shouldn’t be missed, this one doesn’t look promising, because wrestling matches usually have something on the line, whether it’s pride, a title, or over a woman (or a man). But this year there is nothing on the line except just a bunch of matches with famous wrestlers. Woopie. Am I going to watch WrestleMania 21? Nope. ------------ About the author Eric Schomburg: Useless-Knowledge Columnist of the year 2004. An Apocalyptic Dream is now out for purchase.
