Feb. 27, 2005 No he’s not rescuing CBS, he’s rescuing his co-conspirators in the Bush Texas Air National Guard [TANG] fiasco, Mary Mapes. After all in the words of Harry Truman, [the buck stops here.] I was never sure what that meant, I know it means the person in charge is responsible but where did the,[buck] come from. Good old Dan is convinced where there's smoke there’s fire, Even if he lit the fire. After the 200 elections, it would take some kind of an idiot to peruse the Bush [TANG] connection. All that needed explaining has been explained repeatedly. Under Texas law, all records pertaining to a Governors service to the state become the property of the state. George W. Bush’s records were available; it was just some didn’t believe what they read. George W. Bush had replaced a lying, cheating, child molesting draft dodger as president and some thought flying an F-102 Jet Fighter Plane over 500 hours wasn’t enough service to his country. The Dan Rather’s who look back to the future are blinded by the headlights of progress in their rear view mirror. Dan Rather say he told the CBS investigating panel he had to move on a big story. How can a story drug out for ten years be a big story? Even Walter Cronkite is critical of the lack of verification this story had. Dan Rather put his faith in a long time associate. Mary Mapes was so intent on bringing down George Bush she violated every rule of journalism. She allowed her political bias to interfere with her research. Dan Rather turned a blind eye. Had he been on guard he would have known all the players had agendas. With his years of political experience, he should have smelled the skunk. Now Dan Rather departs CBS Anchoring under a cloud of skepticism, his reparation forever tarnished. Dan Rather will go on to follow in the footsteps of Walter Cronkite, willing to appear at the opening of any new car wash etc, just to be able to give an opinion. There’s little Dan Rather can do for Mary Mapes and those who were terminated by CBS, except perhaps adopt them. It isn’t likely Dan will start a new Network and hire them all. He isn’t likely to buy out the New York Times. I suspect Dan Rather’s offer to help those who paid the price for his lack of leadership is a lot of smoke were there’s no fire. It appears another American Icon is deleted from the front pages of journalism. There are a hundred platitudes to describe what’s happened to Dan Rather. The one I prefer [Be honest and don’t fudge the truth.] Do I have sympathy for Dan, no way. He was out to do and say anything to bring down the reelection of George W. Bush. When you play with the big boys you can get hurt. ------------ About the author: Ken Hughes is prone to grammatical error and occasional misspelled words.
