Desktop Versus Laptop (Some Observations)

By Judy Ramsook
Feb. 27, 2005

Most of you who have grown accustomed to using a desktop computer would not trade places with a laptop because of a few factors. Just as most who have been using laptops will not use a desktop unless they had no choice for a variety of reasons.

For one thing, even though the laptop comes with a heavier price tag due to its portability factor, a consumer of this type of computer does not have to worry about lugging around a tower, separate keyboard and we cannot forget those heavy, large screened monitors that are now available. For unless you are accustomed to carrying around heavy items, transferring a desktop computer from one place to another can seem like quite a chore.

And it's not until you have to unplug and separate the multitude of cords that's behind the desktop that you realise how time consuming this task of moving your machine from one place to another was going to be. But it doesn't end there.

After you have untangled all the cords and sorted them out, you now have to exercise caution when moving vital parts of the machine, such as the tower, which is the brain of the computer, (unless of course there is someone to assist you) then you have the monitor.

And then after the successful transfer has been made, you sit back for a few minutes as it finally dawns on you, maybe this is one of the reasons so many computer users out there prefer their portable, all in one laptop to the desktop. Why carry all this around when, for a few dollars more you can have a lightweight, portable computer?

One thing I have been told by some desktop computer users is that they cannot get used to a laptop's keyboard, especially after familiarising themselves with the type of keyboard that comes with a desktop. Of course the same can be said for laptop users who cannot become used to a desktop keyboard.

It all depends on what you're accustomed to, as for me, I prefer the lightweight, portable laptop any day, just as long as it keeps on doing the things I want it to do.
