Feb. 27, 2005 Fred Rogers, who gently invited million of children of all ages to be his neighbor as host of the PBS show 'Mister Rogers' Neighborhood" for more than 30 years, recently died of cancer. Mr. Rogers had an asteroid named after him. This will please fans as well as the few misanthropic critics of Mr. Rogers. Fans who cherish the memory of Mr. Rogers will rejoice in the knowledge that the peaceful and gentle soul has a celestial body named after him. Mr. Rogers was always to good for this world and now his namesake is free to roam the skies forever. Cynics will grin and mumble that it is fitting that a corny and otherworldly weirdo like Rogers would have an asteroid named after him. Postmodern hipsters will chortle and hope that Mr. Roger's asteroid will come crashing down wreaking death and destruction to a nice suburban neighborhood. I worry that it's not only Mr. Roger's asteroid that may cause great harm and destruction. Old TV programs never die -- they keep beaming into outer space forever and ever, Amen. An advanced civilization that happens to tune in to an episode of "Mr. Rogers' Neighborhood may just decide that we are a prime candidate for obliteration. ------------ About the author: Robert Paul Reyes is a columnist for the Lynchburg Ledger.
