Feb. 26, 2005 The 22nd amendment, which limits the President to two terms, has long been unpopular with politicians. As the House minority whip, Steny Hoyer, said "I am against term limits" if course he is. Why give up such a sweetheart job? Represenatives talk about democracy and being elected by their constituents so it isn't fair to have term limits on any elected office. In fact congressmen select their voters not the other way around. For example, every represenative in California (all 53 of them) won with at least 60% of the vote. If voters were truly electing their representives a lot of them would be sent home after a term or two. Most congressional districts are 1 party districts drawn by state legislatures to make sure their party represents the state in D.C. Congressmen like it that way. After all why answer to the voters if you don't have to? Represenatives don't like any attempt to limit their time in D.C. In California Governor Schwarzenegger is attempting to take redistricting away from the legislature and make the disticts more fair, more REPRESENATIVE. Both parties are screaming bloody murder. Neither party wants to give up life time office and one party districts. Now, Congress is taking its enthusiasm for lifetime service to another level. Rep Sensenbrenner(R-WI)and Rep Hoyer(D-MD) want to repeal the 22nd amendment. After all they're in for life why shouldn't the President be as well? My Congressman has been in office for over 20 years. I doubt its because he is so popular, more likely its because the district is gerrymandered to make sure a race is uncompoetitive. One of my Senators, Robert Byrd, has been in the Senate since 1959. They claim the amendment is a limitation on Presidential powers. DUH! I believe that is the point. I'm no constitutional scholar but I think the founders didn't like the idea of people having too much power or wielding it for too long. That's why Washington stepped down after two terms, and thats why most Represenatives and Senators served a term or two then left Washington behind. In case you haven't been able to figure it out I like the idea of term limits. Incumbency gives them an advantage, keeps them in power. After a while it is time to get some new blood in town. For once Senator Specter was right: Two terms is enough. I voted for Bush twice, but I wouldn't like the idea of anyone being president more than that. There are always more people waiting in the wings to take over once someone is term limited. So while I agree with Specter I would add to his statement. Two terms is enough, for anyone is Washington. So let's keep the 22nd amendment and start limiting Congress. ------------ About the author: Craig Chamberlain has written more than 100 articles for Useless-Knowledge.com.
