Feb. 26, 2005 It's every poor shmuck's worst nightmare: You're on a blind date, it's a disaster and there's no way out short of suicide or feigning a heart attack. Technology has come to the rescue: Virgin Mobile in Australia has a service offering an escape from the date from hell. All you have to do is secretly dial three digits and then hang up without saying a word. Virgin Mobile will then call you back a minute later with a perfect alibi to get you out of there. Call Waiting, Call Forwarding and Caller ID are conveniences, but Caller Deliverance is a lifesaver. John, I've had a great time hearing all about your bug collection, but that was my sister, she's in labor and I'm supposed to be the midwife. Sorry, I have to run. Virgin Mobile has come up with a great idea, but I find it troubling and unsettling that a corporation would engage in blatant deception. If Virgin will lie to help get you out of a bad date, how can you trust them when you call their customer service? "Oh, don't worry about that $10 "universal connectivity charge", we're required to charge that per the Telecommunications Act of 200. Don't worry about that $5.00 "regulatory assessment fee", it used to be $10, we're saving you $5. And that $3 "in- state connection fee", if we didn't charge that, New York would declare war on New Jersey." But regardless of my reservations, the next time I'm stuck in a date from hell, I will use Virgin Mobile's new service to deliver me. ------------ About the author: Robert Paul Reyes is a columnist for the Lynchburg Ledger.
