Feb. 26, 2005 So you have just found out something scintillating about a friend, co worker or relative and hard as you try, you are just bursting to share this bit of information with someone you think you can trust. But just as you hang up the telephone from that exciting conversation you just had with the someone you thought you could trust with such thought provoking information, whatever it happens to be, the person with whom you were just speaking may have other plans of his/her own regarding the piece of hearsay just handed to him/her. But as they reach for the telephone or email program, what they have to say could be misconstrued somewhere along the way. For idle gossip has a way of taking on a life all of its own, so by the time the message reaches the tenth person in the chain of people who are informed, the piece of news can be exaggerated, elaborated upon, and lose its meaning in transition, but worst of all, this could eventually find its way back to the person who has now become a victim of gossip. And when that occurs you, the victim wonder, how did this even come about? For something you held private, is now known by all to whom it was told. So what do you do? Contact the person whom you gave the information to and let him/her know how much they have violated your trust? Or are you going to just let it go, hoping the news of your faux pas would soon dissolve? Whatever course of action you decide to take, just keep in mind that the damage has already been done, for all the persons who have been exposed to what they heard about you may have also altered their perception of you. Gossip can hurt us all, but there is nothing wrong with confiding in the pages of one's diary or journal. And although it might not yield the excitement you would expect from divulging a piece of news to a friend, it will remain right where you have placed it, unless someone decides to invade your privacy by reading it, but that's another column for another day. ------------ About the author Judy Ramsook: My first book titled: "Karen's Adventure" which is about two young girls who go in search of their missing parents, is now available.
