The Further Adventures Of Bill And The Doc

By Ken Hughes
Feb. 25, 2005

I’ve written about my friends Bill and the Doc before. The young couple who left Toledo Ohio for North Carolina, after a ten year learning stint at the University of Michigan. A move intended to jump-start their careers, Bill stocking shelves and assisting customers at a Sherwin Williams Paint Store. The Doc. [PhD] As a new research scientist assigned to Homeland Security projects for one of those, [For Smart People Only] companies

It would be unfair to Bill to assume he’s lesser for some reason because he chooses to do menial labor rather than pursue a career involving a higher degree of education. Bill has chosen instead to involve himself in nature, he is an accomplished fisherman. His knowledge of critters large and small is unmatched. Bill has an extensive knife collection and is planning on becoming a knife crafter sometime in the near future. It would be safe to say Bill is a modern day Mountain Man.

The Doc, from her days at middle school in Sylvania Ohio knew she would become a Doctor [PhD] in the sciences. This was the only restriction she put on Bills proposal of marriage. She be allowed to continue her pursuit of an advanced degree. Bill decided there’s a price to pay for quality merchandise and agreed. He also made the commitment to do what ever necessary to assist the Doc. In her goals.

Bill and the Doc are no stranger to intrigue, they frequently find themselves in the center of unusual incidents. I prefer to believe it’s because they’re more aware of their surroundings than most. This brings up their latest encounter with a [Band of Mexican Bandits.]

Bill and the Doc are husband and wife, lovers, and best friends so it’s not unusual they spend as much time together as possible. On occasions, the Doc will pick Bill up or drop him off at the Sherwin Williams Store where he works. The Doc being involved with Homeland Security is forever vigilant. On several occasions, she observed men going in and out of the wood behind the store. She pointed this out to Bill and other employees of the Store. After some minor investigation it was determined they were Mexican Workers who were camped back in the woods. Since they presented no problem for the Store, it was decided they would leave them alone.

Frequently the Mexicans were seen pushing carts, carrying bags, and wheeling bicycles back into the woods. Still no one paid much attention. One morning Bill went out to start the Store’s Van to make a delivery. I won’t describe what Bill encountered, I will say he stepped in the center of it, and it was all over his shoes. That’s when Bill decided no more Mr. Nice Guy. Some way he was going to get rid of the Mexicans.

A few days later the boys at the store were assembling a large order for a customer, it was early morning, no one should have been behind the store at that hour. When Bill heard the noise he went back to investigate. There was a Van unloading bags of something and half dozen Mexicans carrying the bags into the woods. When Bill hollered at them the Van speed off, the Mexicans disappeared into the woods. Bill decided this was the last straw. He dialed 911 to inform the Police.

This is where the story gets interesting. This all took place at the corners of Hammond Road and Tryon Road, Raleigh, North Carolina. Across from the Sherwin Williams Store is the North Carolina State Police Training Academy. Next to the Store is the North Carolina State Police Investigation Bureau, facilities. Next to the woods were the Mexicans had their camp is a County Prison Farm. That should made those in and around the area of Hammond and Tryon corners feel very safe.

When the Police entered the woods, they found a virtual Wall-less Wal-Mart. On display was thousands of dollars worth of stolen merchandise. It’s being investigated but it’s believed to be the largest theft ring in the state of North Carolina. The tools they took into camp that morning were worth well over seven thousand dollars,[$ 7,000.00]

Bill, The Doc, and the Sherwin Williams Staff are more than a little displeased with the Raleigh Newspapers for reporting the incident the way they have. Not much has been written and what has is some what distorted. The papers said the police answered a cry for help. Cry hell, it was a group of citizens doing what the State Police had let go on under their very noses. No mention was made in the papers of those who solved the crime.

You would think those Rookies from the Academy would of at least investigated the campfires if nothing else. They were less than a smell away.

This ladies and gentleman is where your tax dollars are going.
