Root Beer Soda And Your Teeth

By Judy Ramsook
Feb. 25, 2005

Are you looking for an ice cold soda that is not too hard on your teeth? According to a recent report, of all the soft drinks, root beer has been tested as being the one that will cause the least amount of damage to your pearly whites.

A team of researchers from the University Of Maryland dental school in Baltimore has determined that non cola sodas including ginger ale, Mountain Dew, Sprite and even canned iced tea can do much more damage to one's teeth enamel than other soft drinks.

Furthermore, during the fourteen day study, a variety of soft drinks including Coke, Pepsi, Mountain Dew, Dr. Pepper, Sprite, Canada Dry ginger ale and even Arizona Iced Tea were exposed to strong dental enamel. The Results?

The tooth enamel was weakened considerably and even permanently destroyed by exposure of the enamel to the above mentioned sodas, and even diet sodas had the same effect since the ingredient consisting of acidic additives is found to be the cause of enamel damage. The soft drinks found to do the most damage were non cola sodas which caused two to five times damage as darker cola drinks with root beer being the safest of all soft drinks to prevent against dental enamel damage since it contains the lowest amount of flavour additives.

But one thing you can also do to prevent tooth decay is to rinse the mouth with water after consuming that soft drink. In addition, and according to the same report, we all have acid in our mouths, and if this increases the chemical reaction with the soda, it can indeed do more damage to our teeth, so just remember to rinse with water if you happen to be close to a quantity of the liquid, after consuming the soda of course and give root beer soda a try if you haven't done so already. For our teeth are one of our main assets, make them last as long as you possibly can.
