When Kindness Might Not Pay

By Judy Ramsook
Feb. 24, 2005

If you happened to witness an individual being mistreated by another such as the case of the pizza shop incident that graced our screens yesterday, would you try to assist the victim or would you not even think about intervening for fear that you too may become a victim of such abusive behaviour? Or has the good samaritan issue been over rated?

As I viewed the clip, it was apparent that other customers who were also waiting in line, just stood and watched as the victim was attacked not one, but seven times. Considering the times in which we live, sometimes running to someone's aid could result in harsh consequences like maybe the attacker could start giving you a taste of what he/she was dishing out to the victim you were attempting to help.

Because if you do happen to end up becoming a victim yourself, with bruises and lacerations, you may wonder, and all this happened because you were just trying to help out a fellow human being whom you thought was being treated unjustly.

So what's a person to do? Well if you happen to be close to a telephone, you could just summon the proper authorities, the police, as opposed to becoming a victim yourself, at least this way, you will be out of harm's way of the attacker who will be handled by proper law enforcement officials.

And if you're too impatient to wait for fast food/pizza delivery service and you think that the pick up option would save you the hassle of waiting, then just exercise some caution while waiting in line.

For extending kindness today can take on an entire new meaning once a trace of violence rears its head, and it's much different from helping an elderly person cross the street. Be careful out there.
