Feb. 24, 2005 To those people who think that humans are responsible for climate changes, take a hike in Huron State Park in Ohio and scrutinize some of the stream beds and you will note fossils from the ocean floor of many millions of years ago. I can guarantee that there were no men then causing global warming and the flooding of Ohio. Just consider the wooly mammoth found preserved in ice in Siberia. He had been happily munching fruits and berries not long before he froze to death. I can guarantee that humans didn't cause that climate change either. We are egocentric folks, preferring without any real evidence to believe that we are the center of the Universe and that the planet revolves around us. It is nothing but vanity. From the Bible, the Book of Ecclesiastes: 1:1. The words of Ecclesiastes, the son of David, king of Jerusalem. 1:2. Vanity of vanities, said Ecclesiastes: vanity of vanities, and all is vanity. 1:3. What hath a man more of all his labour, that he taketh under the sun? 1:4. One generation passeth away, and another generation cometh: but the earth standeth for ever. 1:5. The sun riseth, and goeth down, and returneth to his place: and there rising again, 1:6. Maketh his round by the south, and turneth again to the north: the spirit goeth forward surveying all places round about, and returneth to his circuits. 1:7. All the rivers run into the sea, yet the sea doth not overflow: unto the place from whence the rivers come, they return, to flow again. 1:8. All things are hard: man cannot explain them by word. The eye is not filled with seeing, neither is the ear filled with hearing. 1:9. What is it that hath been? the same thing that shall be. What is it that hath been done? the same that shall be done. 1:10. Nothing under the sun is new, neither is any man able to say: Behold this is new: for it hath already gone before in the ages that were before us. And from the movie, "The Devil's Advocate," starring Al Pacino, Keanu Reeves, and the lovely Connie Nielsen: "Vanity--definitely my favorite sin!" --Al Pacino as Satan Climate changes have been dramatic, indeed deadly, for eons before humans strode the Earth. And after we have arrived, given the short span of our existence, climate changes have also been considerable. You ever heard of The Ice Age? Just 10,000 years ago, more or less, the climate was much colder than now. And there's no reason to think that another ice age can't occur. In fact, historically, we are overdue. If we are--and that's a BIG IF--causing global warming, that might be staving off an ice age that will kill off most of humanity. Even in the short run there have been dramatic changes. Look at Los Angeles. The first 7 settlements in the Los Angeles area all died out from LACK OF WATER! And now they have more than they need. It is only human vanity and the overweaning NEED of some people to blame humanity which produces the conceit that we are a primary factor in climate change. As for me, I blame the SUN. It isn't all that stable in its energy output. ------------ About the author Brooks A. Mick: 63-yr-old physician, still practicing medicine but retired from the US Army.
