Feb. 23, 2005 It has come to my attention that people have begun defending me based on my age. They have sent e-mails to my critics telling them to stop ganging up on a defenseless kid. I appreciate the sympathy, I really do, but guys, I can fight my own battles. I'm sixteen, I don't need adults to protect me. Believe me folks, I appreciate every person who defends me, and I'd like to thank them, but don't defend me just because I'm young. I write these articles understanding the backlash that I'm going to receive from them. I know what the consequences are going to be, and I reap what I sow. This is not the first time that people have done this. I understand that they wrote similar letters to another writer when he criticized my work. If you're going to defend me, defend me because of your own convictions and beliefs, not because of my age. In about a year, I'll be heading off to college, and living on my own. I can't depend on others for the rest of my life, and I might as well start here. I write these articles as an adult for an adult audience, expecting adult feedback. I don't need someone to protect me. This also goes for those who might ignore what I say simply because of my age. Another writer wrote a similar piece to this, but I'll restate what they said: Basically, don't treat us like children simply because we're under 18, or 21, or whatever age. We may not be adults, but when we say something, you might as well listen, because I'd venture to say that a good half of parents do not know what their kids do behind closed doors. Don't mince words simply because you don't want to offend a minor. I guarantee you, we use the same foul language that adults do, and then some. Once a child hits the age of twelve, you can hardly get them to stop spewing profanity. So, as a final note, please, please, PLEASE, stop treating me like a child, and start treating me like a colleague, a fellow writer on U-K who simply wants to be treated equally. ------------ About the author: Jack Lepiarz is a Junior at Madison High School in Madison, New Jersey.
