Anchorage Alaska Fur Rondevous

By Amanda Baker
Feb. 23, 2005

I don't miss the cold, I don't miss the cabin fever, but I do miss the Fur Rondevous. This is a celebration that happens every year in Anchorage, AK. It's the equilvalent to New Orleans' Mardi Gra, without the heavy drinking. Oh, there's drinking but only at the World Famous Chilkoot Charles' the best pub in Anchorage, in my opinion.

This is the celebration of the Fur Trade, of dog sled racing, and just a way to go out in the cold weather to party. I have fond memories.

When I was a teen, I show cased my cross stitching talent and won best in show at the Fur Rondy crafts fair. That was when I participated.

Most years, I walked around the carnival and watched people with redden cheeks get on the Merry Go Round or the fast upside down turning Zipper. The fire works displays were the best I have ever seen, because the cold crisp weather made the colors shaper.

This weekend, starting Friday, is the start of the World Champoinship Dog Sled racing. The best place to view the race was on top of the 5th avenue garage. You could look down at the street and watch the dogs run by with their handler kicking vigorously behind, holding on tight to his or her sled. The anouncer would be queing up the next racer and the "1...2...3 go!" let the next racer enter into the street. The anouncer would have everybody cheering. I miss going to the race.

There are other exciting events that the family enjoyed, snow sculpting, trade shows, the Miners and Trappers ball (I heard this might not be happening this year), the antique shows, World Champoinship Junior Sled Dogs Racing, Native Craft show, Blanket Tossing, Snow Shoe Softball and Outhouse Racing. These events got people out of their homes and out side in the open cold air. It was worth it!

This year the festival is in its 70th year. And I would love to fly up to join the celebration. Next time I'm planning a vacation in February, I'm going to consider putting Anchorage, Alaska on my itinary to enjoy a unique experience with my family.

You should too. For more information on the celebration go too: www.furrondy.net.
