You Can't Change History

By Tim Quinton
Feb. 23, 2005

Recently I sat down at my desk and started a short story that I had planned out in my head, as usual. Then about half way through I ran into problems. This story was about time travel, which has been done before in print and films numerous times. But the problem that came up was that even though the theory of time travel seems possible, changing history isn’t. Which as I, you’ve said if you could go back in time, you would do things different. Well by my reasoning, you can’t.

Let’s take an example of my reasoning for this. If you had the ability to travel back in time, where would you go? When asked that question, someone said that they would go back and tell their sister not to marry the bum she calls her husband. I then explained to her that if she went back in time and told her sister not to marry this guy she still would. She looked at me strangely as you probably are at this story, but the simple fact is this. If she told her sister not to marry the guy and she listened. Then you wouldn’t have had a reason to go back in time to tell her not to marry him. You would have no knowledge of your sister’s problems. In all of the stories that you’ve read or seen about time travel, this has never been considered. Always the person traveling through time retained their memories of what happened before they changed history, which would be totally untrue.

Take for instance that someone had the ability to travel back before 9/11. They inform the authorities about the planned attack, who take measures, and stop the terrorist. Sounds good doesn’t it, but then the attack doesn’t happen, so you have no reason to travel back in time to stop the attack.

I could go on and on with example after example. It just comes down to the simple fact that you can’t change history. For if you could, wouldn’t someone have already traveled back and stopped all the horrors that have happened in history. Everything from warning the passengers on the Titanic, to killing Hitler before his rise to power. You can’t go back and stop a crime, or prevent someone’s death. So as you can guess my story is about how you can’t change history. What has happened to all of us is history. The only thing that you can change is the future, and that is up to the individual.
