Giving Pro-Wrestling Another Chance [Part 2]

By Eric Schomburg
Feb. 23, 2005

Tim Quinton, the person who wrote “Pro-Wrestling Is Real,” makes a point when he said, “Maybe professional wrestling would become more popular if they told people that the events were real, and not from a written script. For it was much more interesting and real when everyone thought it was fake.” While this statement wouldn’t really make fans change their minds about wrestling, the problem with wrestling is gimmicks and very bad ones at that. It is okay to have a redneck flip people off, drink beer, and beat people up, because that is what rednecks do. In my opinion, the best gimmick wrestler that the WWE has in their roster (counting both Smackdown and Raw) is Kane. Kane is silent, sick, twisted, freakish looking, and he doesn’t overdo it, unlike Gene Snitsky (Those face expressions are overdoing the character of Snitsky). The worst gimmick in the WWE is Eugene. While he is a fan favorite for fans, certain fans that have been watching wrestling for a long time know that Eugene is a horrible gimmick, ranking up there with Doink the Clown and Hillbilly Jim.

The answer is quite clear to wrestling’s problem, it IS the lack of wrestling, but it also the lack of innovative violence, lack of storylines, and the fact that the WWE in particular, is recycling the same storylines, gimmicks, etc. How many times do we have to watch a woman SHOCK us by saying, “I’m pregnant”? Wrestling fans are also saying, “So how is she going to lose this baby?” I did an article regarding Kane and Lita’s story where Lita was “pregnant” with Kane’s baby. I also said that Lita would end up losing the baby, and sure enough I was right. I think the reason why pro-wrestling is close to being deader than dead is the simple fact that the storylines are redundant, we already know what’s going to happen. It’s like watching a remake of Romeo and Juliet just with different players. We know what is going to happen, and sure enough it did.

There has to be something new in the face of the wrestling world, new story-angles, wrestlers with actual wrestling ability, wrestlers with actual verbal skills. I remember when Randy Orton was going to make a tag-team match for what fans thought was going to be for the world tag-team championship, but Orton stated that the tag-team match was for the “world heavyweight championship.” Obviously, this was a mistake on Orton’s part. Wonder why Vince brought Orton up in a main event status IF THE GUY DOESN’T KNOW WHAT HE’S TALKING ABOUT! The tag champs are going to defend their titles on Raw, yet what are the belts (plural) called? The world heavyweight title (singular). Can you hear the crowd chanting "you F'd up?"

The point is. Professional wrestling is neither professional nor wrestling, thus the decline in fan appreciation and support toward the WWE. With morons like Randy Orton not giving a good interview, bad gimmicks that are NOT believable like Eugene, and overrated wrestlers who can’t wrestle like…Randy Orton, it appears that pro- wrestling is just waiting for the Undertaker (no pun intended) to tag the toe of Vince McMahon, because it’s not going to last much longer. However, the phoenix will rise; therefore, we will just have to wait and see what comes out with wrestling.
