Waiting To Thaw

By Renee K. Tran
Feb. 23, 2005

It's snowing again. This time the flakes are gently meandering their way down to the ground where they rest and join their individualistic counterparts in a sparkling white blanket for mother earth. It really is quite beautiful, although somewhat annoying at this point in the year when my cabin fever is at an all time high.

The beginning of the winter season is wonderfull and brings back good childhood memories. Building indestructable ice forts , sledding down Suicide Hill at the park, playing hockey on our neighbors frozen driveway. And the very first snowfall of the season is an awe- striking moment for me. A moment when my mouth gapes open as I watch what seems to be tiny diamonds floating down to melt on my tongue. I feel that inner child in me stirring. That sentiment lasts about two months, tops. After that all I see is the stark nakedness of the trees, dirty sludge on the side of the roads, and one depressing overcast day after another.

Its the end of February, and I am daydreaming about tulips and daffodills, mud puddles and sunshine. I long for the days when I can get up in the morning and open my front door to birds singing and the delicate, sweet scent of hyacinth in the fresh April air.

Spring is the signal of a new beginning, a time of renewal. You can taste it in the succulent strawberries and tender asparagus. You can smell it in the balmy breeze, just as if mother nature has given our little section of the world a fresh new start. And she has of course, with the melting of the snow and the showers that are starting to wash away the harshness of the past winter. You can hear it in the harmonius melodies of our returning feathered friends and in the shouts of excited children as they yell "you're it!". You can see it in the tiny buds on all of the trees that are just waiting for a few more sunny, warm days until they can burst forth with thier glorious green foliage. And lets not forget that first day of intoxicating sunshine when the shorts come out of the closet and people are mowing their grass for the first time and driving around in their cars with the windows down and the tunes cranked up.

Yes, winter around here is long and depressing. But well worth the wait once you get that first little taste of the season to come. The transition from cabin fever to spring fever is one that I have come to really love. Its right around the corner. I am just sitting here waiting to thaw.
