Feb. 22, 2005 In the writing world there are at least two kinds of authors. There are those that write so that they can feed their families. There are also those that write because it fulfills a place inside of them that without writing would either burst or cease to exist. I know there are other types of writers out there including those that simply write for the fun of it. First, the writer that is sitting at his/her keyboard for 8, 10, 20 hours trying desperately to kick out their next novel or book of poetry. They are hoping that they will receive enough royalties to feed their family for another six months. Sleep becomes something that is only remembered by the sentences that have run together or suddenly make no sense at all. The back-spacing that comes with the morning sunshine is both humorous and frustrating. The writer that has a place to fill in his soul or a void that is only filled by writing is totally different. They will find themselves waking from a sound sleep to the sound of the keyboard calling them. It begs them to come and sit and write what they dreamed or what they were processing when they drifted off to sleep. They too may sit at the keyboard until their coffee has a cream film on top of it and their toast matches the temperature of the coffee. They feel their words come alive on the keyboard and flow into and out of them like new blood being pumped through their viens. The part of these two writers that makes a writer... a writer is when they sometimes find that they are one and the same. They are writing to enjoy and fill that empty spot while hoping to fill their bank accounts with next months rent money. It is the passion in a writers soul that make their words come to life. It is the cold coffee that really doesn't taste so bad that makes the writing so real. It is the folded up piece of toast that isn't bad if you eat it fast that makes the words feel right. Without passion in writing, the words are simply the alphabet arranged in ways that spell out words. To find if you are writing with passion, look at your cup of coffee. Look at the brownie you just tapped on the table to see how hard it has gotten. Look at the clock and see if time has gone by so fast, you missed lunch and will catch it at dinner-time. Then you will know that your passion for writing is in the right spot. If not... Pour a cup of coffee for yourself. ------------ About the author: My name is Darrel Day.
