The Appeal Of "Kevin Hill"!

By Jennifer Brown Banks
Feb. 17, 2005

Being a professional writer and former psychology major, I admit to watching TV with a much more “critical eye” than the average viewer. Upon seeing the previews of this UPN program, Kevin Hill, airing Wednesday nights, I prematurely decided that I would not include it in my own line-up of “must see T.V”.

It will never go over, I told myself. The concept is not credible. Here you have Taye Diggs (a major hunk in the black community), cast as a single, sexy lawyer and caretaker (for a cousin’s child), upon the cousin’s death. There were too many stereotypes working against him.

First of all, most of America views black men as absentee fathers who barely support and acknowledge their own offspring. How could his character be convincing? Not to mention, the media’s portrayal of African-American males typically finds them needing a lawyer, not being one! And prior to this role, Diggs had always been portrayed as a man of glitter, with very little substance. Could he pull it off?

One night, through channel surfing, I ended up watching it, as there was nothing else of real interest on that evening. And I admit, I was pleasantly surprised! Not only is he convincing, he’s darn cute! Each week finds him dealing with the demands of being a bachelor, doting parent and “mover and shaker”. Each week finds him facing some moral, professional or emotional dilemma. And each week finds me a bigger fan.

After all, there’s really nothing “sexier” than a sensitive, nurturing, responsible man. Taye Diggs or the average Joe!
