Feb. 16, 2005 Professor Ward Churchill of Colorado University has been much in the news lately and one supposes is thoroughly enjoying his 15 minutes of infamy. A tenured professor in the Ethnic Studies department, he apparently GOT his position by falsely claiming to be a Native American. (The tribe he claims affiliation with denies his membership vehemently.) Much is being made of an article he wrote which essentially said that the victims in the World Trade Center were mostly "little Eichmans," referring to one of the Nazi architechs of Hitler's "final solution" and the murder of millions of Jews, Gypsies, Gays and other "undesirables" in Germany during the 1930's and 1940's. Professor Churchill is also said to be one of that fringe of nuts who deny the existence of the holocaust. Then why is this guy teaching at one of our more prestigious universities? Only the administration can answer that question. For one thing, he obviously wasn't "vetted" very well for his position since what they were looking for was a Native American instructor and, in fact, turned down three other applicants who WERE, Native Americans. Yes, this guy has an inalienable right to his own, however warped, opinions. He should NOT even be fired because of the firestorm surrounding him at this time. He obviously considers America to be a genocidal nation and has stated that we are really worse than Hitler's Germany or Stalin's USSR in that regard. He has every right to SAY so, too. BUT (and that's a BIG "but") he has no right to an audience, no right to a taxpayer funded platform, and no right to a captive audience of our children, whose educations are important to us all. How the man was granted tenure may be a subject for investigation within the halls of Colorado University. Someone made a HUGE mistake. Being tenured, he virtually CANNOT be fired for teaching this nonsense to our kids. However, he CAN be fired for incompetence, falsifying his resume and bringing disgrace to the University-- and should be...at the earliest possible date. It is rumored that alumnae donations at CU have dropped precipitously since this story broke. GOOD! If you want to get the attention of faculty and administration at any university, cutting off their financing is like a plunge in an icy stream. It really gets their attention. This whole thing ISN'T Professor Churchill's fault. The fault lies with a university system that values radicalism above truth, left-wing dogma over honesty and figurative bomb-throwing over honest debate and the exchange of ideas. It's the university's fault for hiring such a doofus in the first place and then granting him tenure only compounded the stupidity. Not only should Professor Churchill go, so should those who hired and elevated him to teach our kids the nonsense he pushes. He has a right to his opinions. I've personally gone to war to insure that he has that right. He does NOT have a right to a tax-supported platform and captive audience FOR those opinions, however. We can't stop him from speaking. We CAN, however, refuse to listen to him, and THAT'S what we should be doing. ------------ About the author: David A.
