Feb. 13, 2005 President George W. Bush has spoken. He intends to continue to spread democracy throughout the world. However, he didn´t mention how to achieve this goal in his State of the Union. Peacefully or with violence. Big opportunities lie in front of him. Big problems too. To start optimistically. There finally seems to be a chance of new peace talks between Israel and the Palestinians. How will the Bush government respond to this? The Palestinian leader Abbas is invited to come to Washington. That´s a good sign, but what will President Bush offer him? Financial support, pressure upon the Israelis to negotiate seriously, help to stop the Palestinian terrorists of Hamas and Islamic Jihad? Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice doesn´t say much about it. Talking about her, she was in Europe last week. It looks like the bad relations between Europe and the USA have gone. She literally said the time of disagreements between Europe and the US lay behind us and that we must co-operate together again. Words everyone agrees with, of course. But what about the policy of President Bush towards problems like Iran and its alleged nuclear installations? Are those spying airplanes above Iran only meant for spying purposes or are they meant to prepare some kind of attack? The American government has been silent about them for more than a year. North Korea, the treatment of prisoners at Guantanamo Bay, the prosecution of those responsible for the almost genocide of the people in Darfur. A lot of possible conflicts in point of view between Europe and the USA still exist. Maybe President Bush can clear the air completely when he visits Europe from next week. ------------ About the author Johan Peters: I'm a freelance journalist/editor from Rotterdam, The Netherlands.
