Steven Spielberg's Latest Movie: The War of the Worlds

Yesterday while listening to the radio on my way home from work. The newscaster began talking about Steven Spielberg's latest movie “The War of the Worlds”. Well being a lover of classic science fiction literature and movies, I couldn’t wait to get home to check out the web site. Then came my disappointment when I did see what is to be the latest celluloid creation of Hollywood.

Now H.G. Wells wrote the original literary classic long, long ago. Basing the story on late nineteenth century England, which was his time and place. But would you take a Stephen King novel, (which are all based in Maine) such as Pet Cemetery, and have it just outside of nineteenth century St. Louis. It just doesn’t fit to the original work. Yes I know that Hollywood thinks that you have to update everything for today’s moviegoers. How would it have looked if Russell Crowe had entered the coliseum carrying an assault rifle. If Achilles had flown a stealth fighter from Greece, and just dropped smart bombs on Troy.

Last year I had mentioned to others that Hollywood had lost their minds, and was solely doing nothing but remakes of classic movies when “Flight of the Phoenix” came to theaters. Why were they taking great movies and remaking them? So that today’s audiences will come in and see what has changed? So that the MTV crowd would leave their homes for one night in their lives? How about this for a thought. Take bad movies that Hollywood has created, and redo them. That list is almost endless, so someone else pick which one you think should have stayed on the shelf for eternity.
