Liberal Anger At America's Rejection Of Janet Jackson's Filth

By Ron Lewis
Feb. 9, 2005

The liberals are out in force after the Superbowl attacking Paul McCartney’s halftime performance as “boring.” I’ve read four articles to that effect so far and each has come from a columnist who is consistently left-leaning. If the show was truly boring, conservatives would have been bored as well, but I’ve read no such article from them. The common sentiment in these articles reveals an almost organized attack. I believe these attacks are motivated by liberals’ continuing anger at America’s rejection of the filthy show put on last year, a show that symbolized liberal disdain for traditional values and their elitist attempts to impose perversion as the standard of conduct in our culture.

I watched the show and was not bored. Yes, I’d heard the songs many times before, but for good reasons, they are great songs that have endured and will endure. I never had the chance to attend a Beatles concert, nor have I seen Mr. McCartney in concert - I enjoyed the opportunity. The Beatles were, arguably, the most influential artists of the 20th century and their real talent is undeniable. Compare their skills, or even Mr. McCartney’s alone, to the stars of last year’s show.

Has Janet Jackson or Justin Timberlake ever written a song? If so, which I doubt, the chances are slim to none that it will endure for thirty years. Do they even play a musical instrument? I’ve never seen either try. Their only real talent is singing and there are literally tens of thousands of Americans with skills equal or superior to theirs. Both owe their stardom to others – Ms. Jackson rode to fame on the coattails of her older brothers, while Mr. Timberlake was just another of the cookie cutter cuties rolled off the assembly line by that guy (I forget his name) who creates and discards boy bands for a living. They are both manufactured celebrities of no significant talent. I doubt 10% of Americans can name a song by either one. I would guess that at least 70% of Americans can name a Beatles song. Paul McCartney wrote those songs and played the guitar and keyboards during the performance.

Maybe a telling sign is that my two stepdaughters, ages 10 and 12, both recognized “Hey Jude” and sang along. We’re talking about two dyed-in-the-wool celebrity addicts who live and breathe the current pop stars. Although I’m sure they would have enjoyed other performers more, we all enjoyed that show whereas I and the missus would not have enjoyed most of their favorite performers.

Other than song selection, and lack of nudity, I don’t get what other reasons liberals have for complaint. The show was basically the exact same as every other Superbowl halftime ever. Some popular singer/band gets on a stage in the middle of the field and plays a few songs while orchestrated hoopla/pyrotechnics swells around them. Seen from that perspective, all the halftime shows are boring and predictable. To this show’s credit, my daughters remarked on the unique stage design with its integrated video screens.

What would the liberals have wanted instead? A different singer? OK, but do they think there exists some performer who has a universally admired style. I don’t like anything by Ms. Jackson or Mr. Timberlake. I didn’t like last year’s show, even without the nudity, and thought it boring, but I wouldn’t have been compelled to write scathing reviews for that reason. It seems to me that one would be hard pressed to find any performer more universally admired than Paul McCartney. For an event like the Superbowl, that attracts viewers from all demographics, he was the perfect choice. Heck, have him back next year with Ringo. Now, if Elvis were still alive….

All-in-all, these liberal attacks are just one more example of their separation from mainstream America. Ratings for the half time show were great. Why doesn’t the ratings system work to “cancel” liberal columnists? How do they continue to monopolize the airwaves and print media when most don’t agree with their views? The answer, of course, is that media is fueled by advertising dollars and only a subset of America is gullible enough to be influenced by most advertising. Thus, media delivers a product that attracts gullible people. I long for a time when my outrageous cable bill pays for commercial free TV – that was the original promise of cable and America has been scammed by the reality of today’s commercial saturated television.

But that’s a subject for another post.
