Free Stories In Exchange For Literary Criticism

By Mark Gelbart
Feb. 7, 2005

In my e-mail box today I found a hurtful comment from a reader of this page who obviously disagrees with my politics. Worse.....he said I use bad grammar. Maybe I should kill myself. No, first I'll torture myself, and then kill myself. I sent him an e-mail back asking him to give me some examples of my bad grammar. Hopefully, that will at least dispell his opinion that I view myself as brilliant.

I never took a creative writing class. I never seriously considered myself to be a writer until last year. Far from considering myself to be "brilliant", I criticize my own work and find numerous faults and shortcomings. If I had the money and the time, I would sign up for a creative writing class, but I can not do this. My wife is 100% disabled, and I must take care of her 24/7.

Literary criticism costs money. I once considered sending my novel to a writer's service, but the cost was prohibitive. Therefore, I am offering the readers of this website the opportunity to give me some honest literary criticism. I have four short stories that are available as electronic files. (Rich text.) I can't pay money for the criticism, but in return they are free. Not many things in life are free. The following is a description of the stories available.

"The Last of the Oolites" is a sci fi story about an alien race as the victims of human genocide. The word length is roughly 3300 words and it takes 15-20 minutes to read.

"The Hamburger Cure" is a story about a pre-Civil War farmer who is part of the Underground Railroad. Unwittingly, he takes in escaped slaves who are actually zombies. The word length is 3300 words, and it takes 15-20 minutes to read.

"Joe Bradley's Trip to the Store" is about an old man who takes his wife and sister-in-law on their monthly shopping trip, and he gets lost. The word length is roughly 12,600 words and it takes 45-60 minutes to read.

"Fred Fornier: The Professional Reviver" is about a man who has the worst job on earth. The word length is 4500 words and it takes 20-25 minutes to read.

Anyone interested in reading these stories in exchange for literary criticism should contact me via my e-mail address.
