Feb. 6, 2005 Contrary to its designation of being the “boob tube,” TV can provide many hours of enlightened viewing and harmless pleasure. (As long as it is balanced with other activities). It’s less expensive than going out to the movies and won’t pinch your pockets like cable can. Programs on various channels offer everything from college courses, to culinary instruction, to culture. But much like anything else, your enjoyment will require a weeding process. Here are the programs I rush home for and why you should too! THIRD WATCH--- What do you get when you combine action, drama, romance, intrigue, gore and good acting? One of the best cop dramas around! This program makes Friday nights without a date do- able. The cast members have great chemistry, the weekly episodes are well written, and it gives a glimpse of life on city beats. KING OF QUEENS----Rarely is comedic appeal universal. For example, many whites would find the humor of Richard Pryor, (very popular with black audiences), too raunchy. While many blacks, (not all), would find the likes of Seinfeld silly. This comedy, however, is clever and can connect with audiences of varied tastes! “The Heffernens” have relatable lives, real jobs, flawed family members and black friends! Kevin James is a blast, and by far one of the best comedic actors I’ve watched in a while. THE BACHELORETTE---- Okay, I admit, there’s nothing of any real value with this one. Not to mention, it’s not even real realistic. Ask the average single gal when was the last time she encountered 15 gorgeous, gallant, “together”, gainfully employed guys simultaneously, and most likely her answer will be….never! Nonetheless, I watch it for the eye candy. Who says women can’t be a little shallow once in a while too! THE BERNIE MAC SHOW---- The Mac is not just a comedienne, he’s a craftsman. Based upon some real life aspects, the show deals with ongoing dilemmas in raising his sister’s kids (as a result of her drug addiction). Watch him weekly as he tackles the tough issues of parenting like peer pressure, the birds and the bees, and value choices. JOEL OSTEEN--- For Sundays when you can’t quite make it to church, here’s the ticket! A cute and charismatic minister, based in Texas, Joel Osteen gives you the “word” without being overly preachy. He begins each sermon with a joke, and ends each message with spiritual food that will sustain you for the days ahead. Be prepared to be impressed. ------------ About the author: Jennifer Brown Banks is an award-winning poet and popular feature writer.
