Can The Pope Retire?

By Amanda Baker
Feb. 2, 2005

I don't know the answer to this question, but my prayers go out to Pope John Paul the 2nd. He has been the Pope for as long as I can remember.

When he came to Alaska, in the 1980's, he visited St Patricks Parish,. He was energetic, healthy and seemed to be a very nice man. Many people reached out to him and he graciously accepted their admiration.

Now, the pope is ill, he has a bad sickness. Maybe it is time for the Pope to retire and let the Cardinals pick a new Pope. I know that the way things are done, the Pope has to die. But why not let a man that served the faith, retire, let him have some peace and less stress for the rest of his life. Priests and Nuns can go into a retirement, they are taken care of by the church. Why not a Pope?

I am still exploring my faith, but it disturbs me that my church, so steeped in tradition, has a hard time changing policies. I think this policy, that the Pope has to die first before new church leadership can be elected, is funny.

Can a Pope retire?

I really don't know the answer, but I think he should. He needs to take care of himself now. He deserves it, he has served the church well.
