New And Improved Ain't Always Better

By Jennifer Brown Banks
Feb. 2, 2005

Here I was, all geeked up to buy “RAY,” the terrific-taking-the-world-by-storm life story of Ray Charles, depicted by jack-of-all-trades, Jamie Foxx. Counting the days, even, when it would be released for public purchase. Only to discover that it would not be available on VHS, for those of us who refuse to be slaves to all the yearly upgrades to technology that keep many “keeping up with the Joneses.”

Truth is, I don’t have cable. Don’t own a DVD player, have had the same computer for years, and only recently got on board with CD players, merely because I received one as a gift.

When it comes to play-time pleasures, I still enjoy a good book, or some classical music on cassette. Of course, accompanied by herbal tea.

For me, new and improved ain’t always better. It is simply another ploy by manufacturers and merchants to have us perpetually digging ourselves deeper into debt. As we amass software, hardware, and adult toys that often become obsolete before they’re even paid for!

My motto? “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.” And definitely don’t replace it.
