Feb. 2, 2005 I'm sure by now you have discovered the new online messenger and chat format called Skype. Like all new services, it soon develops a nature of its own. So now I'm being "Skyped" by strangers, sending "Let me Skype you" messages to prospective "Skypee's" and trying to speak "Chinglish" to a pretty girl in Jinan, China. And sadly, like all new services, it doesn't take long for the porno's, pervs or simple idoits to discover it as well. My wife gets far more of this than I do, for obvious reasons. Lately she removed her picture from her Skype Profile as she received so many potential "Skypee's" asking about the size of her mammary glands or sharing with her the size of their male organs! I mean, she just cannot wait... Now to be fair, there are people of maturity, of good character and who just love meeting new people also on Skype. My Chinese lass is just such a person. She barely speaks or writes English and my Chinese sounds like a movie soundtrack running backwards! Yet, despite these setbacks we have shared a surprising amount of information with each other. I tried calling her on Skype last week and discovered that she cannot oral in English! I see the court case of Michael Jackson in the news and I wonder what his profile would be like on Skype. "Talented musician seeks young children for parts in new music video. Send picture." Just to say I am saddened but not surprised by the way the immoral always attacks the moral or the way filth tries to dirty the clean! Yet despite this, I do enjoy the positive aspects of Skype. I now have regular friendly chats with people in Barcelona, Haifa, Jinan, Shanghai, Perth and Rio. We share with each other about our culture, our hobbies and travels and our jokes. Of course it will be a long time before my Chinese lass will understand my "Knock knock" jokes! ------------ About the author: Ian Campbell is the author of the novel "The Fifth Cylinder."
