Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome

By Amanda Baker
Feb. 1, 2005

Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome is a syndrom where women makes too much male hormones or testosterone. This syndrome is the leading cause of female infertility. I am learning about this because I have it.

PCOS is the abbreviated name of this problem and the symptoms do vary between individuals, but the symtoms are:

Irregular or absent menses: This means longer than normal breaks between periods.

Numerous cysts on the ovaries in many, but not all, cases: I don't have this but I'm told that a cyst is very painful. The pain starts in the lower region of the pelvic area.

High blood pressure: I don't have this symptom, but high blood pressure leads to heart probelms.

Acne: This occurs mostly on the cheeks but can be a problem all over the body.

Elevated insulin levels, Insulin Resistance, or Diabetes: I am Insulin Resistant, which means my body is not using the insulin properly.

Infertility: I have had one son but have had a hard time getting pregnant with my second child.

Excess hair on the face and body: Another unfortunate problem of mine, I have hairy feet and some facial hair. This is embarasing to admit but I hope this can help other women.

Thinning of the scalp hair (alopecia): I don't have this symptom but I have seen women with this problem.

Weight Problems or obesity that is centered around your mid section: I have this problem too and am trying to reverse the weight gain. People with PCOS have a harder time loosing weight because of the hormonal imbalance in their system.

I have used a useful sight to help me cope with the symptoms that this syndrome produces, it is www.pcosupport.org. This web site gives information to women who are stuggling with this syndrome. I find the news letter helpful.

PCOS is a non-curable syndrome but you can make the symtoms less by the following; Take vitamins, exercise (2-4 hours a day), take Saw Palmento Berry because it helps lower the testosterone in your body, and work with your doctor. Women with this syndrom can get pregnant but the syndrome has to be under control.

I have been living with this diagnosis for about six months and that is just it living. A person with PCOS had a high chance of Heart disease, chance of cancer in the reproductive organs, and rates of diabetes are higher.

I am not a doctor, just a patient, if you think you might have this; please consult your physician.
