People Like Michael Moore Do More Harm Than Good

By Ann Plooster
Dec. 31, 2004

When the clock strikes midnight New Years Eve and we begin a new year, is anything going to change? Will I wake up Saturday morning to discover that all Americans decided poof, just that easy, to show some respect to our Commander and Chief? Will I awake to a world where "God" really is "the word"?

How did America stop respecting its leader in the first place? I could be wrong (and I know I'm going to get guff for this) but don't you think the media is to blame? People like Michael Moore do more harm than good in the name of "opening our eyes". Why was our Commander and Chief made to publicly vindicate his decision to seek out and capture a known terrorist, one that wouldn't comply with UN sanctions? The UN's decrees time and again held nothing but noncompliance from this terrorist. The Gulf War - what was that all about -- if not for the actions of Saddam?

President Bush is our Commander and Chief. He asked for assistance from the world to aid our efforts in tracking down this known offender, but little was offered. He said we'd go without your help then. He delegated authority to his generals and standing firm in his conviction, we went into Iraq. We were all behind him then, or most of us anyway.

From that time on, it seems President Bush has done everything to explain his actions. It was a major issue during his campaign. Doesn't anyone feel we should respect our presidents' decision and support him? A recent returnee from Iraq when asked why he did what he did answered "Because my Commander-and-Chief told me to." I know this for a fact. The man is my brother-in-law and a 22-year member of the Military Police and Canine Division, up front in all the action. If he can show dedication and respect for his commander, why then can we civilians not do the same?

How are tomorrows' leaders going to react to this lack of deferential regard from their adult authoritative figures? Children do what they see. Asking our president to go before the public on Meet the Press and explain his actions was, in my opinion, uncalled for and completely without regard to his position. I'm aware he did so under his own volition, but never the less, it was the people who demanded this action on his part.

Everything seen on CNN is seen around the world. It's no wonder a lot of other countries are against the United States. It has been said if one cannot respect their self, how then is anyone else presumed to respect them? Why should any other country regard our commander with high esteem if his own country wants constant vindication of his leadership? I'm reminded of a scene from Pearl Harbor. When the president stood up out of his wheelchair and said, "Don't tell me it can't be done," what would the scene have played out as if that president had to explain his actions?

But alas, Bush won again, didn't he? And in spite of Michael Moore. Many will say isn't that respect enough? No it's not! To elect a president of our own free will and then make him account for his every action, what does that say about the choice we made? Are we not sure what we are doing? Again we've voted and chose our leader, but even before his inauguration takes place, he's, yet again, endeavoring to gain possession of our respect. I love my country. I'm proud to be an American; but I love America right or wrong, good or bad. President Bush stands for America. He is our leader and until he's no longer at the helm, he deserves the utmost from the populace he serves.

And God? President Bush is a God-fearing man and throughout his campaign his faith in God was evident. But the rest of us...where is our faith? Are we asking the same thing from the originator and ruler of the universe as we do from our Commander? Do we want vindication from God as well? As a whole, I think we are in trouble.

This is how I see God: Written on an overpass, this graffiti appeared:
GOD IS DEAD.
SAM

The next day the graffiti read:
SAM IS DEAD.
GOD

Vindication? I don't think so. God made the sunrise and set. He made the oceans and all the lands. He made man. Do we really have the gumption to ask Him to explain why? We as imperfect, fragile humans need stability in our life. Two things we can always count on are God and our president. How could we possibly not show appreciation and esteem to both? I don't by any means put them [God and the president] in the same category...but they both are constants in our lives. We need reverence in our mindful dealings with them. I, for one, certainly don't want to be "Sam" and I don't want the world to think we don't trust the man we judiciously placed in office.
