Dec. 31, 2004 It's holy football day when all loyal Americans sit down and watch football all day while they recover from their horrendous hangovers. I live in Georgia where we are blessed with a great deal of football talent, and a great coach in Mark Richt. That means the radio will be on today beginning three hours before the game. We've got to get the radio warmed-up for the legendary voice of the Georgia Bulldawgs--Larry Munson. In addition to the radio all the televisions in the house will be on, but the volume will be turned to mute, so we can hang on every exciting word from the three-hundred and twenty year old radio announcer from Minnesota who has been broadcasting Georgia games since 1966 (a great year, SEC champs). Watching the Georgia Bulldawgs is an intense experience for die hard fans like me. I get so hyper that my wife doesn't even want to be in the same room with me. EXCUSE ME. WOOF! WOOF! WOOF! Pardon my morphing in and out into the canine world, but it's getting close to kick-off which means WOOF! WOOF! WOOF! The happiest moment of my life is supposed to be the day I got married, but don't tell my wife the truth (even though she knows it). The happiest moment of my life is as follows: in 1980 if Georgia beat Florida they were going to be ranked number #1. But the disgusting lizards were winning 21-20 with about a minute left. I got up, told my parents, "Dooley blew it again," and left the room. A few minutes later they called and said, "Hey Marky, you might want to see this." I came in the room and Lyndsay Scott was running into the endzone. I may have missed the play, but the call by Larry Munson has been repeated one billion times in Georgia. Here it is. "Buck Belue back to pass, in trouble he rolls to his right, he's got a block behind him, he throws, it's complete to Lyndsay Scott to the 25, he's to the 30, the 35, the 40, the 45, the 50, the 45, the 40, the 35, the 30, the 25, the 20, run Lyndsay run, 15, 10, 5, TOUCHDOWN! I broke my chair. I came right threw my chair. 26-21 DAWGS on top! We were out of it and gone. I gave up. You did too. Miracle!" This moment still brings tears of joy everytime I think about it. And Larry Munson is a perfect example of a neutral sports announcer. Here's his call of the 2002 Georgia-Auburn game. I've got it on CD, and I've only listened to it a couple of times. Auburn was beating Georgia 21- 17 with about a minute left. It was fourth down. "Here's our last play of the night. 90 Seconds. Crowd roars at us. Three wideouts. Man we've had some shots haven't we? Greene gets the snap, he throws for the corner OH GOD! A TOUCHDOWN. Who was it Watson, or Gibson. It was Michael Johnson. 23-21 with 85 seconds." WOOF! WOOF! WOOF! WOOF! WOOF! This year Georgia finally beat the gators again. In the cigar-smoking voice of his, Larry kept saying,"Never give up, never give up." Larry Munson forever. ------------ About the author Mark Gelbart: My book, Talk Radio, is a black comedy about a radio talk show host who gets kidnapped and psychologically tortured by a loser.
