The Ocean's Wrath: Where Was God?

By Pam
Dec. 30, 2004

The extent of devastation is yet to be determined. The death toll rises steadily; countless graves are being dug, as people hunt desperately for the missing. This is by far the most intimidating natural disaster in history.

I know I was not alone when I asked myself the question. “Where was God”? Then it occurred to me…

How does one explain a powerless toddler being reunited with his father days after being discovered in the water, abandoned, in aftermath of the tsunami? He was found, taken to a hospital, and his picture was posted on the Internet. Shortly after, he was reunited with his father. Now, they are not alone to cope with the loss of their missing wife/mother.

How does one explain a 20-day-old baby found floating to safety on a mattress? The fury of the tsunami destroyed entire communities, scattered grown adults effortlessly, yet this defenseless infant was found, sleeping unharmed on a floating mattress, her whole life ahead of her.

How does one explain a 10-year-old boy, sitting in a tree where the violent sweeping waters had stashed him? The storm dismantled homes, schools, shops, but there it stood, unexplainably, this unshaken tree, embracing a toddler, who awaited his rescue.

How does one explain no animals found dead? No elephants, no rabbits, not even a bird. The waves washed up many miles inland, yet all wildlife seems to have fled in the nick of time. How does one explain their ability to pick up on this unexpected, tragic phenomenon?

There is only one explanation to these miracles. “Where was God?” we ask. Right where He always is. Watching over us. The Bible says to have faith is to be sure of the things we hope for. It is being certain of the things we cannot see or explain. It is by faith that we understand the universe was created by God’s word, so that what can be seen was made out of what cannot be seen. Now is not the time to question our faith. On the contrary, we need to pray like never before.
