Dec. 30, 2004 Guns an' Porn an' Roses: OK, so I was kidding about the "roses" bit. "But what is similar about guns and porn?" you ask. Many years ago, back in the dawn of pre-history for most people nowadays, President Richard Nixon established a commission to study pornography's pernicious effects on society. Most of the members were hostile toward pornography from the outset, but it turned out that they were honest folk. After much detailed study, probably requiring them to subject themselves to many reams of erudite studies, many hours of salacious movies, and tens of thousands of licentious photographs, probably including the naked breasts of thousands of attractive women, and other equally boring exhibits, the commission concluded that there was no evidence that pornography adversely influenced anyone. President Nixon immediately embraced this exhaustive scientific study and--oh, wait, no he didn't. He immediately declared that he didn't believe the commission and was going to proceed with anti-porn measures anyway. "So what?" you ask. So now there was established a committee of generally anti-gun folks who studied reams of evidence about violence, crime, and gun-control measures, and they, being amazingly objective folks, concluded that there is no evidence that the presence of guns, the degree of gun-control laws and enforcement, or the availability of concealed carry licenses had any effect whatsoever on gun crimes. http://www.worldnetdaily.com/news/article.asp?ARTICLE_ID=42167 Just as with President Nixon, however, there are going to be politicians who say "to heck with evidence" and will go on believing what they wish. If you can locate such prejudiced and irrational politicians in your neighborhood, note their names and avoid voting for them in the future. They will have demonstrated that they don't have the intellect to make good decisions. ------------ About the author Brooks A.
