Dec. 30, 2004 The article's title is misleading enough. You can't blame christmas for ruining a pagan holiday. If you blame anyone, blame the Church of Rome. Around the time of the second century the church was looking for a way to increase funds and political power. There was only one way to perform such an act. Bring the christians and the pagans together under one roof. How? quite simple blend the pagan holidays and the christian holidays together. The church took the birth of the christ child and moved it from its orginal date of mid april and plastered it to the calendar date December twenty fifth. Just by chance a pagan holiday happened to fall on the same day. A pagan ritual that just happen to involve decorating trees and the giving of gifts in celebration of the reincarnation of the pagan deity who just happened to come back as a tree. To further expand their power and influence the Church of Rome took the death of the man Jesus and made it another holiday in and of itself. This time it was a little tougher. They invented the deity of the "Easter Bunny" an animal which came around in the middle of the night leaving presents for all those that believed in the reserection of the man called Jesus. Surely a god in man form, which upon the third day arose and asended to the heavens. Neat little tie in right? The pagans fell for this one hook line and sinker. To enhance the pagan's need for symbols and rituals, the church came out with the holy symbols of the cross. This was to replace the house hold idols commonly worshipped by many of the pagans of the time. As an added note, the Church of Rome added confession. Instead of Jesus, the risen Christ, being the one who makes intersession for us, the Church now had the duty of doing the same thing. Only they reported to Christ, who inturn reported to God the father. The only hitch was that you had to confess all of your sins. If you were a criminal and had a reward on your head watch out. The Church of Rome would turn you in for the reward! So don't blame christmas for ruining a wonderful pagan holiday. Blame the Church of Rome for being greedy and lustful for power. ------------ About the author: Warren Smith recieved an offer to have his first book published.
