Jerry Orbach: Farewell To Thee

By Judy T. Lloyd
Dec. 30, 2004

One of my favorite songs is Farewell To Thee and this week I have had to say farewell to some fine people. I was writing the article about Elvis Presley when I saw the news report of Jerry Orbach's death from prostrate cancer. Since I am a cancer survivor this issue has always struck me hard. But the man was a fine actor and I enjoyed watching him perform.

Prostrate cancer is still a killer and has taken the lives of many men. Among them was Robert Urich in which I have an autographed letter mailed to me in 1998. I liked all of the characters both of these men played. I would ask that all men that are of the age where problems exist to go and have the PSA test done. Most cancers if found early enough can be cured. This cancer among men has as many breast cancer takes women. But one had to admire his talent and his way of projecting himself into an loveable character.

He had hoped to make a comeback in his character as Detective Lenny Bruce. He injected a great deal of wit and wisdom into the character. He was believable and made one think of a kindly father like image. He was very warm and funny and played different phases of his career. This week I said goodbye to a cousin-in-law who was also a gracious lady. And then today I read about the death of a young woman who died from a CUP cancer which is Cancer Of Unknown Primary. It other words the lung cancer had no known primary cause. She did not smoke and the first lesion showed up in her brain. I did not tell my other friend that has the same thing because I want her to keep her faith and hope alive. But sometimes we do not make it to the next act. I am glad that Jerry Orbach was one act that I caught.

In the future I hope to do more on the other aspect of cancer. Which this week news came out about cancers having stem cells. If this is indeed a medical fact then this is research that you will see Judy T. Lloyd advocating because once they find out how cancer starts then they can begin working on a cure. For sure I will be watching this. I do want to say this in that my forefathers were Cherokee. I do not hate the Arabs in fact most of them do have some very delicate ideas about their women. In that they do not treat them like the Taliban did in Afghanistan. I have a respect for the peoples of these countries and I worked with nurses that were Muslim. They were the most gentle people that I met in a harsh world ivolving geriatric medicine. One of my onocologists was of Arab descent. In fact in my book The Twelfth Of Never I explore some of the backlash against the Arab/Americans. I will not apologize to anyone for my faith but maybe if we did respect each other more there would not be wars. But for now I say Farewell To Thee Jerry Orbach and Thanks For The Memories.
