Dec. 29, 2004 It’s celebration time! It’s Christmas, the birthday of the Lord. What joy, what jubilation, what merrymaking, what spectacle! Carols for weeks together, charity to the poor, special prayers to the Lord, midnight masses around the world, Pope in his full regalia blessing the world from his high seat in St Peter’s Square. Santa Claus brings ‘return gifts’ for the entire humanity in the form of Lord’s blessings. Even the humblest of the humble feels close to Christ the savior. A fitting birthday celebration of the chosen son of God. The entire world waits for this day the whole year. Only this year the Lord chose to send a return gift one could never think of. Lord is merciful; He saves. But this time He chose to shake the earth real hard in the shape of Tsunami immediately after His birthday celebrations which wiped out large chunks of humanity from the face of this planet. The fury and the magnitude is such as defies all calculations. The return gift hits you in the eye! Hundreds and thousands of buildings have flattened. Over a lac of souls have perished. At least two million people have been rendered roofless. The UN estimates it to be the biggest and the costliest disaster relief operation ever staged in History with many billions of dollars of damage. A dozen nations from Southeast Asia to Africa tallied corpses at tropical beaches, devastated villages and choked hospital morgues – with 10,000 dead found in a single Indonesian town. Aid agencies fear malaria and cholera may add to the toll. And Santa’s gift to beloved children - one out of every three killed is a child! As a gesture of the Lord’s ‘mercy’, in Cuddalore (India) the driveway to the church was strewn with corpses. The magnitude of deaths was summed up by a Red Cross Worker in Sumatra (Indonesia), “We don’t have enough people to bury the dead.” A large pit was dug to give mass burial to 378 dead bodies in Colachel (South India)! There were no priests performing rituals, no sons lighting the funeral pyres, no mourning relatives. Just the grave-diggers and the grave- fillers. Now what about our so-called ‘Lord the merciful’? How could he perpetrate a crime of such a magnitude? That too when the humanity was celebrating His birthday and singing paeans to Him with full devotion. Didn’t even spare innocent angels in the form of children. He is no more the savior. In fact He has never been. It’s only out of our innate fears and ignorance that we continue to keep faith in His benevolence. If there was any merciful God, He died long ago. Shakespeare lamented, “As fleas to wanton boys, so are we to gods; they kill us for their sport.” Tsunami has proved that God is a plain killer. Should He go scot free when justice and fairplay (godly attributes) require the murderer of even one person to hang? Henceforth God should be shown his place. Humanity should learn to be on its own instead of wasting its time, energy and resources in Churches, temples, mosques et al. extolling the virtues of religion and the non-existent God. Religion today has become a multi-trillion dollar business. Let a small part of this huge amount be utilized for giving aid and succor to the ones who have survived despite the Divine Will. The great thinker of our times, J.B.S. Haldane in his ‘Possible Worlds’ grieves, “…at the present time, I believe that mankind is suffering from too much, rather than too little, faith and it is doubt rather than faith that must be preached.” Amen! Over to we, the people. ------------ About the author: Mohinder Bhatnagar, an Indian, has experienced life in its varied colors.
