Dec. 29, 2004 To show how screwed up the thinking is in so-called conservative "think tanks," the issue of abortion is debated and decided by overfed, overpaid men. Some of these hypocrites have been caught up in sex scandals (Packwood, Gingrich, Clarence Thomas, Bill O'Reilly) Yet, they have the guts, gall and the gumption to tell women (most who wouldn’t give these clods a second look) what they can’t do to their own bodies. Don’t get me wrong: I am not in favor of abortion. To me, the intentional infliction of mortal medical procedures on a living organism is murder. The bible says, “Thou shalt not kill,” and common sense tells me that this does not apply solely to adults. However, I’m not such a zealot about it that I would go and bomb an abortion clinic. There are those who will argue, "How can an embryo be considered a life when it cannot support itself outside the womb?” I say that if it has human genetic material—it’s a life. Second, there are ADULTS that can’t support themselves outside the womb. What are we gonna do with them—send them back? So no matter how you hard you rally behind criminalizing it, the conservatyive viewpoint of abortion is whack— no pun intended. Then again, let's keep it real: My opinion shouldn’t count for anything. No mans should, because abortion is a woman’s issue and therefore, final say should lie with them. After all, they are the people most affected by it-- emotionally, physically and some might argue, spiritually. In this country we have a large and powerful group of men with some sort of “Father Knows Best” mentality. They seek to stop abortion by any means necessary. No, I’m not referring to those twisted, bomb-planting, right wing zealots who stand outside clinics hurling bottles and epithets. I’m referring to people like Jerry Falwell and Rush Limbaugh. These men would love nothing more than to round up every women that ever had an abortion and personally toss them into the fiery pits of hell. They want to tell women what they can’t do in , or to their own wombs. They're saying that women aren't intelligent enough to make the decision for themselves. Next thing you know they’ll be advocating the abolition of spousal rape laws and telling women how big their breasts should be. I know, American history was spawned by contradictions. This is a nation founded by men who claimed to espouse Christian principles, but owned slaves. Worse, they beauguarded their way across the land raping and killing everyone who stood in their way. So I suppose when we talk about abortion some hypocrisy is to be expected. This is best illustrated by the fact that there's a freak like Clarence Thomas sitting on the Supreme Court debating this issue on moral grounds. This is like having O.J. Simpson as a marriage counselor. ------------ About the author: Timothy Stelly is the 45-year old author of "Tempest In The Stone" and the upcoming, "The Malice of Cain".
