67,000 Dead; Media Blames Global Warming

By Craig Chamberlain
Dec. 29, 2004

"A creeping rise in sea levels tied to global warming, pollution and damage to coral reefs may make coastlines even more vulnerable to disasters like tsunamis or storms in the future" So said Alister Doyle, an environmental corrispondent for Reuters.

Yeah, right. I have some swampland in Florida for sale if anyone is interested. Ok, you're probably wondering how I can sound so flippant in the face of a disaster that killed 67,000? Well I am not, this is a tragedy. But our world is full of tragedies. Remember the earthquake a few months ago that killed 40,000? Probably not. Disasters come and disasters go. Every new one being called the whatever of the century.

I'll give you an example: back in the early 1900's a hurrican hit Gavelston Texas, and it killed 8,000 people. Hurricane Andrew, which was much more powerful, killed far less. Want another one? I am reading a book about Alexander Hamilton. Hamilton grew up in the carribean, while he was a boy a hurricane came and leveled the island to the ground. Everyone thought that was the worst one ever and that there would never be another one like it.

Now about this global warming garbage. I might have missed a few science classes when I was in school, but I know tsunamis are caused by earthquakes. Earthquakes are caused by movement in the tectonic plates. The climate of the planet has nothing to do with it. I can hear the flat earthers now "global warming made the wave bigger, you idiot, that's why so many people died."

No, it didn't. A huge earthquake made a big wave. The reason so many people died is because of the countries that got struck. Poor nations that can't afford to build to protect against natural disasters. Earthquakes hit Japan all the time, but there is very little damage because they can build structures that can withstand them. This tsunami hit villages with mud huts and grass roofs, that is why the death toll is so high. Blame poverty, at least we know that actually causes damage.

Want a history of disasters, read the Bible. Oh wait, I forgot, this site has been hijacked by a bunch of semi literate, foaming at the mouth, atheists. I can't use the B-word without being mugged. Our planet is a long history of disasters. I mourn with those that lost loved ones, but sadly things like this are nothing new.

The next big one isn't too far off most likely, but its not because of some simple Al Gore like theory, things like this always happen.

Until next time.
