Is Patience Still A Virtue?

By Judy Ramsook
Dec. 29, 2004

Does patience still produce roses or is patience still a virtue? As I observe the lack of this trait in many among us what I see is examples of immediate gratification.

It used to be that we were supposed to 'wait' until that special someone entered our lives. Now with the convenience of internet chatrooms, matchmaking companies and dating services readily available, so seem to be those special someones some have been seeking. Then there is always the local singles place of one's choice.

Do not get me wrong, no one expects to meet someone by not performing an action that would propel you in that direction, but have we just become too impatient?

We expect the right job at the right time, and if that does not satisfy our expectations, we become disappointed and move on to seek out that perfect job. Some who are not able to find what it is they are seeking give up the quest uttering that much familiar phrase: 'I can't find a job.'

The thing is, the jobs are probably there, but since one might not be patient enough to conduct a proper search, he/she at once becomes frustrated.

As far as material possessions go, the UPS and Fedex people have never been busier, for people want their things right now or by the next delivery date. Or if your patience is too thin for that, one can always take a trip down to the nearest retail outlet that carries the product he/she wants.

Is it too late now for patience to make a comeback? It might depend on what is desired, or should we settle for Mr. or Miss Right Now, instead of waiting for that special face to grace our immediate space?
