Dec. 29, 2004 There is no escaping the scenes on television that show the devastating effects of the earthquake. Something that I think may happen here in the United States within a few months or years. But right now it is hard to ignore the straggering toll of over 60,000 deaths. That will go higher as disease and other related incidents soon hit. If the drug companies now want to do something to redeem themselves in many eyes why not donate vaccines for the survivors? I once had a shot to prevent typhoid fever because I was going to the coast on a school trip. Surely these companies even if for no more than a tax break can send vaccines and medicines to the relief workers. Unfortunately because of cancer and a back injury I cannot go and help in some small way. In fact I probably barely have enough money to donate but I can write people that I know and ask them to help. Despite whether we feel the countries will appreciate our help is no reason not to. Once I got caught in a hurricane and was swept off the road in the mountains of Virginia. I cannot image what they are going through. It is the children that I feel the most for. But I think that the milk of human kindness is called for here. Maybe a few people can send bandages or other items like toothpaste and brushes or any of the things these people lost. It does not have to be a big donation because I am sure whatever people chose to send is welcomed. Clean water and ways of disinfecting the contaminated food sources and what remains of their housing. But it is medicines that is probably needed now for them. Because disease right now is the biggest threat to the survivors. In some places there are not enough people to bury the dead. So I would think that earthmoving equipment would also be called for. Whatever and we can still pray for them despite what you feel about religion. It could have been us. I think that I would gladly give up any free samples of medicine for these people who need it so badly. That is my wish for the New Year. ------------ About the author Judy T.
