Dec. 28, 2004 Are you among the many who make New Year’s resolutions? If so, you are also probably among the many who fail to keep those resolutions. This is particularly true in the area of fitness and health, where gyms are full in January and empty in March. Most people fail to carry through with those resolutions for even a couple of months. That means the vast majority of those who have resolutions to change their body for the positive fail. In a related fact, 95% of the people who go on a diet gain back the weight they lost – and often more. If you are like most people, you will give the old resolution process another whirl this year. For those who focus on their physique, here are a couple of key tips to help you finally succeed at making permanent change. It is not about the body – it is the will. Although almost everyone focuses on the body and how to change it (for example, a resolution to ‘lose 25 pounds this year’), the key issue is the will. How bad do you want to make your resolution come true? How strong is your will? That is the key. The battle is won with your will. If you want to achieve your resolution bad enough, you can do it. It requires a hearty commitment, and consistency, but you can achieve your resolution during the year. Once you have the will power, the rest is much easier. The second tip for succeeding in your resolution, particularly if you are aiming at improving your physique this year (as most people do) is to fire at the center of your target - literally. This translates into a focus on your waistline. If you want to control your body, control your waist. By reducing the size of your waist, you cause everything else to go down. Don’t get caught in the trap of using weight loss as the measure of your success. You may lose 8 pounds of fat, gain 4 pounds of muscle (particularly if you are lifting weights) and think you haven’t made much progress. Actually you would have. The key is waist size, and when you see it dropping you know that you are making real progress in transforming your physique. This year don’t’ make weight loss your specific goal; make a drop in your waist size your main goal. All the other benefits (leaner legs, trimmer torso, etc.) will happen as a by-product. Targeting the waist is always important as it acts as a monitor of your overall health and condition. Did you know that those people who have large waists have a much higher probability of getting diabetes? The same is true for heart problems. The waist reveals much about a person. Conquering the waist requires a comprehensive attack. Diet is good, but it is not enough. Cardio/aerobic exercise is great, but again, there is more involved than just cardio/aerobic action. Direct waist work (crunches, partial sit-ups, etc.) is also good, but not enough in itself. A full package approach is the best way to win the war on the waist. For a good in- depth discussion and plan of attack, consider purchasing the book Six-Pack Abs in 60 Days, written by Robert Kennedy and myself (Dwayne Hines II). The book is listed under ISBN 1552100111 and can be purchased at Barnes and Noble online, Amazon, or ordered directly from MuscleMag International. The cost is minimal and will provide specific insight on mastering your middle. A trim waist makes your entire body look better (a smaller mid-section makes your muscular profile appear fantastic) and will help insure better health. Make a resolution to keep your will power firm throughout the year. Will power is the key to consistency and achievement. And make your waist the target of your will power this year. ------------ About the author: Dwayne Hines currently has 12 books selling in major bookstores and writes for major magazines such as Physical and FitnessRX.
