What Is A Friend?

By Gerald Bosacker
Dec. 27, 2004

How do you measure a friendship? Do you let it soak in hot water to see if it will become too small for its purpose, like a bargain cotton shirt? Do you try to dissolve it with bitter acid like a miner assays his ore? Do you overload it to see if it will break as the builder tests his bridge? No, you do not test it at all, for like the earth beneath your feet, it is there for you! A friend will stand by your side with sustaining comfort and protection when all the world seems to turn against you. A friend will give you food and drink when you have none. A friend will open their door to you when you need shelter. The only thing more valuable than having a friend is the great satisfaction of being someone’s friend.

About the author: Gerald Bosacker is a prolific writer who is minimally known to the paying public but lavishly displayed, pro bono, on the internet. Retired, he survives by requiring tasting fees from his grocer, and lodging reviewals from his landlord. This survival tactic learned from editors who charge reading fees, enables Bosacker to survive on the pittance penchant, given by his grossly profitable but disloyal corporate employer. Thankful that he wasn't an Enron employee, Bosacker seeks fame in his new role, as satirist and social commentator aware his recognition will come posthumously.
