Dec. 27, 2004 In 1993, the Environmental Protection Agency classified secondhand smoke as a Group A carcinogen, the same category as asbestos, benzene, arsenic and radon. Mull that over the next time a smoker politely inquires, "Do you mind if I smoke?" He might as well be asking, "Do you mind if I spike your glass of water with arsenic" or "Do you mind if I store my old abestos insulation in your basement?" There is no safe exposure level for Group A carcinogens. It's more than a question of comfort. Secondhand smoke kills 50,000 people every year from heart and lung disease -- more than all other Group A carcinogens combined. Would you allow someone into your home who is wearing a suit lined with abestos? Of course not! And neither should you admit anyone into your residence with a cancer stick dangling from his mouth. Secondhand smoke is a proven killer and I think that smoking should be prohibited in every public building. But until that blessed day arrives I will at least insure that my residence is never contaminated by any inconsiderate cigarette smoker. ------------ About the author: Robert Paul Reyes is a columnist for the Lynchburg Ledger.
