A Frisco Christmas Remembered

In a joint in Frisco, in Castro, back in ’68 (drinking quite a lot, living off the streets), Christmas Day, pictures on the walls, showing a bleak lack of talent, dotted with ugly gay men, some souls playing cards, eating sandwiches at the bar; a fat bartender, his sidekick slim, both looking at me. I asked myself: “How’d I ever walk into this place?” To a non-gay, it’s a ting insultive. “Ah! where’s Tangier?”
