A Christmas Present Only I Could Give Myself

By Amanda Baker
Dec. 24, 2004

Christmas time is a great time for reflection. I got all my relatives gifts and mailed them on time. I expect that the gifts I have recieved are tasteful and very nice, but I felt that this Christmas something is missing.

I've thought about this for a couple of days now and concluded that today would be a good day to follow through with getting my gift. I walked over to the Navy College, on the base I live on, and enrolled in a program that will refresh my knowledge. This program will help me get back into college and finish the degree that I started when I was seventeen years old.

This is a gift, I alone, could give myself. The service is available to ALL service members and spouses who want to further their education. This service goes over, reading, writing, math and science. A person can go over all of those subjects or only the subject that person feels weakest.

I struggled through college, being a single parent, going through a bad legal custody fight and a death of a mother, so I dropped out of college to deal with life. Something I am not very proud of because I do have a trade school degree, so I should have been able to handle what life was throwing at me.

I encourage anybody out there to look at the services their communities offer. If a person is in the military or a military spouse look into education oppertunities that the various services offer.

Give yourself a gift of education. Its the best gift a person can give themselves.
